Alright so a lot of stuff happened today on the Winnipeg front. Yesterday we had found out that Winnipeg had already signed off on the deal and it was signed off early this morning. Reading twitter feeds and TSN we were told that there was going to be a press conference at noon in the MTS centre. Leading up to the announcement there wasn't much news because there wasn't really any news to report that everyone already knew. Most of us had known about Atlanta moving to Winnipeg, the press conference just made it official. This was a historic day for Winnipeg and Canada but we didn't learn all that much today in fact we were left with more questions then were answered. We had known that Atlanta was moving to Winnipeg and we knew that Winnipeg would play in the South East Division for at least one year but that was it. The press conference today didn't give us any answers in the sense of the name of the team, the logo of the team, the president of the thrashers opted out of moving to Winnipeg while the coach and GM positions are still up for question. Andrew Ladd the captain of the Thrashers is a free agent this summer and we are not sure if he would want to make the trip to Winnipeg for the next coming years.
I think this meeting was an important part in Winnipeg's future, now that the paperwork is all done, True North can now focus on the important things for the future of the team, city, and franchise. I think the main focus of the meeting today was to make the speculation official and to really get the fans excited about having the team. Gary Bettman said to the fans that if they want to show the Board of Governors that they deserve an NHL team they must purchase 13,000 season tickets which shouldn't be a huge problem for Winnipeg. June 21st is when the 2011/2012 regular season schedule is released. That is also when the Board of Governors will decide if Winnipeg was a good decision for the league. I really don't think Winnipeg should have a problem attracting fans regardless of the small hockey market. This was a city that lost their team 15 years ago and are now itching for NHL hockey back.
The city has grown considerably in the last 15 years and although I wasn't alive when the team left 15 years ago I will be sure the team franchise will be completely different than the one that hit the ice 15 years ago. True North knows that Winnipeg had a sketchy past and that is why they want to start fresh. That is why the JETS will not return. The name was brought to Pheonix when the moved and right now the league owns the Coyotes. This means the league owns the rights to the name and I am sure it would be quite expensive. The team is exploring new options and from what I've heard it could be anything from Moose, Falcons (Winnipeg team from 50s that won gold medal for Canada), Lakers, and beavers. Whatever it is, it better be cool and for most fans, it wouldn't matter the name just as long as they have a team.
